The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is an Exterior Routing Protocol (EGP) used for inter-Autonomous System (AS) routing. Common uses of BGP are for Internet access and peering connections with Service Providers, MPLS VPN connectivity between enterprise CE (Customer Edge) routers and Service Provider PE (Provider Edge) routers, and inter-domain routing within large Service Provider and enterprise networks. BGP is an extremely verbose protocol, which makes it very difficult to monitor, analyze and troubleshoot.
