FORMER CISCO EXECUTIVE VP TAPPED FOR PACKET DESIGN BOARD Gary Daichendt Rejoins Cisco Colleagues Judy Estrin and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 8, 2001 -- Former Cisco Systems Executive Vice President Gary Daichendt has joined the board of directors of Packet Design, LLC, the networking startup formed last year by four-time entrepreneurs Judy Estrin and Bill Carrico. Packet Design develops a variety of networking-oriented technologies designed to enhance the performance, scalability and manageability of the Internet infrastructure. Unlike traditional product companies, which take technologies through a full design, marketing and sales cycle, Packet Design licenses these technologies at the prototype stage or spins them out as separate companies (e.g., the recently launched Vernier Networks, a wireless LAN security and management company). As spin-outs are created, the core Packet Design team remains in place to continue developing new projects. Estrin, who met Daichendt when she was Cisco's chief technology officer from 1998-2000, said, "Packet Design's unusual approach of simultaneously developing multiple technologies presents a special set of challenges -- among them, what happens to those technologies when they leave Packet Design. Gary has a highly analytical way of looking at the application of technology that will be invaluable to us as we determine which business model -- licensing, spin-out, etc. -- makes sense for each of our projects. He also has an impressive track record as one of the industry's premier sales executives, with an unparalleled set of relevant customer contacts and understanding of sales channels." Daichendt is the fifth member of the Packet Design board, which also includes Carrico, Estrin, Frank Quattrone of Credit Suisse First Boston, and Bill Elmore of Foundation Capital. Daichendt joined Cisco in 1994 as vice president of intercontinental operations, earning subsequent promotions to senior vice president of sales and executive vice president of worldwide operations, a post he held until December 2000. Prior to joining Cisco he spent 10 years at IBM in various sales, marketing and management positions; and eight years at Wang Laboratories, where his last position was vice president of central operations. Co-author of the book "I-Operations," he holds an M.S. in mathematics from Ohio State University and a B.A. from Youngstown State University. About Packet Design
